Homemade Ketchup

We are working to cut out foods with HFCS (see my post about it here). Add to that my desire to be frugal in the kitchen...and it makes sense for me to try some recipes for homemade condiments! On my list? Mayonnaise, ketchup, salad dressing, kefir, yogurt, and seasoning mixes.

Today, we are going to make Homemade Ketchup!

I'm using this recipe from HealthyHillbillyHousewife. I will LYK how it tastes!
Excellent Homemade Ketchup

* 6 ounce can no-salt-added tomato paste
* 1/3 cup tap water
* 2 tablespoons vinegar
* 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
* 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1 pinch cloves
* 1 pinch allspice
* 1/8 cayenne pepper
* 1/3 cup brown sugar

This is simplicity itself. In a medium bowl combine all of the ingredients with a wire whisk. Blend well. Scrape the mixture into a pint-sized, resealable container. Chill overnight, to blend the flavors. Use wherever ketchup is desired.

I wonder if you could use tomato sauce instead of the paste & water.... (I don't have paste on hand.)

Also, I found that because I am in charge of making my own ketchup, I could decrease the over-all sugar content in each successive batch. Now we're at about 1/3 the sugar of what we were originally at, and my kids haven't complained once!

I made this yesterday, and it's great! Super easy to do.

FR - That's one of the things that appealed to me about making my own condiments - the ability to control and alter the ingredients. Good idea to gradually cut back on the sugar!
